ANDREW GURRUWIWI BAND
May 3 @ 6:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Andrew Gurruwiwi Band is a high-energy, 8-piece funk band who have honed their chops on the beach at Birrtjimi and in the dirt of Yirrkala, a remote NT community in N.E. Arnhem Land.
Led by Andrew Gurruwiwi, a shy-but-extravagant, blind, keytar-wielding Yolngu elder with a passion to make people dance while sharing his culture they write real funk jams in their native tongue, Yolngu Matha.
Andrew Gurruwiwi Band have released their debut album, ‘Sing Your Own Song’ – an album laden with infectious grooves and impressive musicianship, destined to take Australia’s festival circuit by storm in 2024 and 2025. Gurruwiwi’s influences are wider than the Arafura Sea – among his inspirations are the rhythms of Africa, Jamaica, India, Mexico, blues, rock and flamenco.
Buoyed by the success of his East Arnhem Land counterparts, Yolŋu surf rock outfit King Stingray, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band has hit the road and is playing festivals and shows across the east coast in 2025, including here in Gimuy at the Tanks Arts Centre.
