Twelve years in the making, Australian super group Tex, Don and Charlie have a brand new album and are celebrating its release with a massive national tour.
It’s only ever happened on a few rare times, so when Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon), Don Walker (Cold Chisel) and Charlie Owen record music together, you know it’s going to be special.
Stopping in at the Tanks for an intimate night of story-telling, the band will play songs from their rare, special recordings, including the trio’s spectacular 1993 debut Sad But True – itself widely regarded as one of the great Australian albums, and 2005’s All Is Forgiven; as well as their latest offering, 2017’s You Don’t Know Lonely.
To be released nationally on June 30, You Don’t Know Lonely is a gripping collection of 12 evocative stories in song, featuring drummer extraordinaire Charley Drayton, bass master Steve Hadley and pedal steel wiz Garrett Costigan.
You Don’t Know Lonely is bookended by a pair of Don and Tex duets (the muscular ‘What I Am’ as the opener, the ridiculously beautiful ‘How Good Is Life’ to close proceedings) with the two of them alternating singing duties on the remaining numbers, complimented by Charlie’s masterful guitar work.
The song ‘Here’s As Good As Anywhere’ is an older, wiser, more calibrated view of the world that’s on offer, inspiring the album’s title: “You don’t know lonely/Till you’ve looked back down the road/From one more town/Knowing she’s no longer there/And here’s as good as anywhere.”
“It’s just a little movie about hitch-hiking into a town, and there’s clearly a regretted girl, whom we all have; and in this case, there’s no going back,” Don Walker says.
Tex, Don and Charlie play The Tanks Arts Centre on Friday the 15th September. Tickets on sale 6th of June. Tickets available through Ticketlink
