Eli Birchall

Resonate – Eli Birchall, Eddie Skiba, Ruth Young

One of the greatest pleasures of running a night like Resonate is discovering new acts, and this week we have two great acts making their Resonate debut along with regular crowd favourite Eddie Skiba.

The Name Eli Birchall may be familiar to some of your for his writing in this very magazine. This Thursday Eli makes his Resonate debut and will be playing the 7.00pm set. Eli grew up in the Daintree & Tablelands and started learning guitar at age 15. In 2007 he relocated to Broome W.A and started the band “Cumulo” with Timothy Delany & Tanya Ransom. They played loads of gig, got nominated for the West Australian Music Industry Award, made it to the finals of the “Next Big Thing” competition out of hundreds of bands from across the stage and released a self titled E.P. The Band then moved to Melbourne for 4 years and according to Eli Melbourne was “Cold and grey, awesome and wonderful but cold and grey”. After 13 years away Eli moved back to North QLD after realising it actually is really beautiful up here. Eli is currently enjoying playing the vibrant local music scene both as a solo artist and also as “The Sleeping Suns” a collaboration with vocalist/guitarist Will Maslen and other talented local musicians.

Eddie Skiba is no stranger to the Resonate stage and is one of the more popular regular acts that frequent the Grand Hotel Stage. Eddie has recently released a new album titled “Blend On The Border” and has been getting around the country doing launch shows. Check out Mitch Sullivans review of Blend On The Border here. Eddie hits the stage at 8.20pm

Playing the 9.30 Resonate slot is another act making her Resonate debut – Ruth Young. Ruth grew up in Kuranda in a musical family of “Old Hippies”. Her dad (who will be joining her onstage on Thursday night) is a banjo and slide guitar player who most recently played with award winning local act “The Hillbilly Goats”.  Ruth has been writing songs since the tender age of 13, spent 13 years living in Israel and by day is a doctor specialising in emergency medicine. Make sure you stick around to catch Ruth on Thursday night.

Resonate is staged every Thursday night at the Grand Hotel in Cairns. Kitchen opens at 6.00, Resonate blasts off at 7.00pm entry is free!
