PattyJ Resonate 2015

Resonate – PattyJ, Em Joy, Handles

We kick off the first Resonate of 2016 with one of NQ’s most talented and eclectic songwriters – PattyJ, along with two fresh new acts that have never played Resonate before.

I have recently just had the pleasure of mastering PattyJ’s new album “Songs From Outer Space” and I can tell you now it is a cracker. Patty was the kingpin behind 90s/2000s grunge rock outfit Infamous Izzy and was later a key member of local folk rock outfit The killer Beez, who ended up playing some pretty big shows supporting the likes of John Butler, INXS and Paul Kelly among others. In all the years I have known Patty, I am yet to hear him write a dud song, every track is a killer. Make sure you catch Pattys set from 7.00pm.

Playing the 8.20 set this week is Em Joy. Em Joy’s tunes are ones of reflection, optimism, playfulness and love. Her folky accoustic sound has been likened to Angus and Julia Stone, Jack Johnson, Regina Spektor, Daughter, Colby Calait and Missy Higgins. (Which makes sense as they have all been musical influences). You can check out our recent interview with Em here.

Playing the 9.30 slot this week is Handles. Handles are an acoustic, folk pop duo made up of Cairns locals Luke Hanlon and Andrew Martin. The group’s original material incorporates the earthy tones of the trumpet with the subtle sounds of flugelhorn, alongside a driving rhythm enhanced with hand percussion.
The band recently returned from a year in Mount Gambier, South Australia where they studied Jazz at James Morrison’s Academy of Music while also playing an extensive run of shows around the Mount to great response. The duo have returned to Cairns for a collection of gigs over the summer and recently recorded a performance for Balcony TV.
