I Baby et Lulu are a dazzling ARIA nominated musical duo bringing the romance and excitement of bustling Parisian street cafes to music venues across Australia.
Successful musicians in their own rights; Abby ‘Baby’ Dobson is the lead singer of Australian 90s pop group Leonardo’s Bride, and Lara ‘Lulu’ Goodridge is a celebrated violinist and vocalist for the Australia rock group FourPlay String Quartet.
Baby and Lulu met a long time ago and became firm friends after realising that they both had a love of all things French.
“I’ve been infatuated with France for as long as I can remember,” Lulu says. “It was at university that I discovered some of the great writers, poets and thinkers of France. And of course, there’s also the French music, cuisine, and cinema which continues to enthral me.”
“The French language is a portal to everything delish,” adds Baby.
After connecting over their respective French love affair, the playful duo also realised they both had a similar sense of ridiculousness and decided to sing a song together, in French, in harmony, on top of milk crates at a warehouse party, for the great fun of it.
Eight years on, Baby et Lulu have formed a scintillating musical partnership which has been seducing audiences nationwide, and have released two albums in the process; the most recent of which was nominated for an ARIA Award.
Their selection of classic and contemporary chansons include Serge Gainsbourg, Edith Piaf, Camille, Charles Aznavour and more, as well as their own original compositions written in French.
Baby et Lulu’s six piece band features some of the country’s finest jazz players forming an extraordinary musicianship, fronted by the playfulness and passion of Baby and Lulu dressed up in frou frou outfits and singing in heavenly harmony.
Baby has also translated Leonardo’s Bride’s iconic pop hit Even When I’m Sleeping into French for their debut album Même quand Je Dors; delighting young and old with the popular hit song at festivals around the country including WOMAdelaide, Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Melbourne Festival.
