Bombino (Niger)
Friday 27 Feb 2015
With a backstory to make your jaw drop and a sound to match, Omara ‘Bombino’ Moctar is one of those rare cases of pure musical genius.

A member of the Tuareg Ifoghas tribe, a nomadic people from North Africa, Bombino taught himself to play the guitar as a herder in the desert near Tripoli, in exile from his native Niger. Tracked down by filmmaker Ron Wyman, who had spent a year looking for him after hearing a cassette of his music, Bombino went on to become a musical hero of the Tuareg people.

His album ‘Nomad’ debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music chart in 2013, and has been described as ‘Utterly, utterly fantastic’ (BBC) and ‘A perfect match of sound and soul’ (Rolling Stone). Make sure you’re a part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience at Tanks.

Tara Tiba (Iran)
Friday 24 April 2015
Praised as one of Iran’s most exciting new talents, Tara Tiba will mesmerise you with her soulful voice and an extraordinary vocal technique.

Following successful shows at the Perth International Jazz Festival and Fairbridge Folkworld Festival, Tara Tiba has launched her debut album, a Persian Dream, which features improvisations of centuries-old Persian poetry, original compositions and jazz with a Persian flavour.

Tara studied voice in the classical Persian system, but was prohibited from performing in public as a female singer in her native Iran. Since moving to Australia in 2012, Tara has been able to share her music and the deep cultural traditions of Iran with international audiences, including WOMADelaide in 2015. Be transported to ancient Persia, as interpreted by this talented young woman, in a magical Tanks show.

Equus (Mongolian / Middle East)
Friday 14 Aug 2015
A new and exciting player on the Australian world music scene, Equus brings a Middle Eastern resonance to the traditional songs of Mongolia.

The stunning artistry and musicianship of these five consummate musicians will be on show at Tanks for a night of world music like you’ve never heard it before. Mongolian artist Bukhchulun Ganburged is a virtuoso in the extraordinary overtone singing technique known as khoomei, and he combines this with his traditional horse-head fiddle, to spectacular effect.

Combining exotic Middle Eastern instruments such as the oud, saz and bouzouki with the Indian flavour of the tavil, zarb and kanjira, this show promises an invigorating fusion of musical influences.

Bandaluzia Flamenco (Spanish)
Friday 23 Oct 2015
When virtuoso guitarist Damien Wright meets award-winning dancer Jessica Statham, the result is Bandaluzia – the dazzling Flamenco act that will have you in raptures.

Ignite your senses with this unique Australian interpretation of the powerful music and dance form that is flamenco. Bandaluzia is highly acclaimed for its ability to mix elements of other genres into their performances – the rich harmonies of jazz, the exotic melodies of the Orient and the infectious rhythms of South America.

Awarded Dance Australia magazine’s ‘Most Oustanding dancer of 2013’, Jessica Statham weaves a beautiful thread through the music, ‘from the graceful elegance of her arm movement to the furious rhythmic precision of her footwork’ (Sydney Morning Herald). A thrilling event, not to be missed!
