Resonate Blues – GG Davies, Garrington T Jones, Sugarcane Collins, Dan Howls

The Blues comes to Resonate in a big way this week the 23rd of October with a very special Blues edition of Resonate. One local and legend and not one, not 2, but 3 international touring acts will be hitting the Resonate stage with some serious Mojo.

Kicking off the event at 4pm will be local legend GG Davies, having recently released his “Soul Shine” G.G’s big bluesy voice always turns heads. GG Davies grew up in Sydney and now resides in Far North Queensland’s Daintree Rainforest. Bankrupt and divorced, music kept his soul shining. Expect a bunch of blues from the wrong side of town.

Playing the 5pm set, direct from the U.K is Garrington T Jones. A founding member of UK band Stompin’ on Spiders, Garrington Tee Jones was a relative late starter as a musician. Once a gig promoter based in Malvern, England, Garrington tried his hand at acoustic guitar and decided that performing in front of the footlights was more appealing than the graft of promoting and stage management. So he took to “learning the ropes” at local folk and blues clubs before forming Stompin’ on Spiders in April 2009.

Since those early days, Garrington has become an accomplished acoustic instrumentalist, vocalist and harmonica player. He became a major contributor to the Stompn’ on Spiders song-writing partnership, drawing upon a love for all types of Blues, classic Rock, Folk and World Music styles to celebrate the beauty or protest against the experiences of everyday life in the 21st Century. The Stompin’ on Spiders partnership yielded three studio and two compilation albums until the band called it a day in mid-June 2016.

2014 Australian Blues singer of the year winner Sugarcane Collins will be playing the 6pm set at Resonate this week. A long time local, Sugarcane spends a lot of time touring the country and the world, including a few stints in the U.S seeking out the places where the blues came from. Sugarcane has recorded a few highly acclaimed albums and in 2007 won the Chain award for Blues album of the year, and best blues singer of the year in 2014. Don’t miss one of Sugarcane’s rare local shows

Playing the 7.00 set this week is U.K touring act Dan Howls (pictured). Dan howls, the son of a keys teacher and a sax player heavily influenced by old blues heavy hitters John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters. With a Tom Waits growl, Dan learnt blues as a kid and started tramping and playing through dirty dive bars at the age of 22. Since then he’s taken out emerging artist award at Nannup music festival this year, has been featured on fremantle radio, recorded a live video session with Cardinal sessions in Germany and has an upcoming EP release in January recorded by James NewHouse (Ash Grunwald, Kill Devil Hills).

Resonate kicks off at 4pm every Sunday at Cairns Courthouse Hotel. Entry is free.

Resonate is on rain hail or shine. In the event of bad weather Resonate will be moved inside to the main bar area.
