Joan As Police Woman rare solo show

EXTRAORDINARY New York musician Joan Wasser, who performs as Joan as Police Woman, will play a very special rare solo show at Tanks Arts Centre this October.

The Cairns show is the last stop on the Australian leg of the ‘Joanthology’ world tour to celebrate the launch of the 3-disc Joanthology album.

The tour will see the celebrated musician perform solo with just her songbook, piano, guitar and bewitching voice; a live format not seen since she toured her acclaimed 2006 debut album Real Life.

Joan’s sound has naturally evolved throughout her career which boasts six breath-taking studio albums, thousands of live concert performances, and dozens of collaborations and performances.

There are also some, well-documented, dark times in Joan’s career including the death of her boyfriend Jeff Buckley in 1997, the suicide of her friend Elliot Smith in 2003, and her mother’s death four years later.

Music is the medicine that has carried her through difficult times.

“I can comfortably say that music has saved my life and continues to save my life,” she says.
“I am a devotee. It’s not something I can even choose or not choose, it’s just what is.”

Joan has collaborated with dozens of famed artists including Lou Reed, Damon Albarn (Blur), Antony & The Johnsons, Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens, John Cale, Aldous Harding , RZA (Wutang Clan) and Norah Jones.

She’s also produced an award-winning album for Scottish avant-folk outfit Lau and another for fellow Brooklynite Domino Kirke.

“I say yes to almost everything,’ she admits.

“I just want to be making music all the time.”

Joan will reimagine many of the key songs from Joanthology in an extended concert set that gives fans a rare chance to hear many of her intensely personal and intimate songs that she hasn’t performed for many years, alongside new material and well-chosen covers.

Joan As Police Woman plays Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday 19 October.
