Katie Jay is a Cairns based musician currently working on her debut album “You’re a Dreamer”. Music has always played an important role in Katie’s life and singing and making up songs is something that she has done from a very young age (often driving her family crazy on long car trips). Katie grew up with role models for inspiration in her own family, such as her aunty Sarah de Jong, composer of music for movies and theatre and her uncle Lucas de Jong who has sung opera all over the world. With these, and other great examples so close to home it was a natural progression for her to become involved in making music.

In Melbourne Katie learnt to perform singing other peoples songs at weddings and corporate functions. When she arrived in Cairns a new chapter began, she began to write her own songs. Katie Jay’s songs are loved. Katie won the 2014 Songwriters Award at the Tablelands Folk Festival with her song “The River”, the same song that she was then invited to share on Balcony TV early in 2015. Late in 2015 Katie Jay, along with her band The Code were invited to perform at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco for a benefit concert for the Owsley Stanley Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/OwsleyStanleyFoundation).

Most recently Katie Jay has teamed up with Mark Myers (The Starry Field, The Middle East) as producer at Big Sister Studio (Emma Louise, Leanne Tennant, King Pig) in Cairns putting together her imminent full length album “You’re a Dreamer”. In a world full of EPs Katie made the old school decision to make a full length album, something she is immensely proud of.

The single “Carried Away” is a slice of ’90s inspired synth pop/rock. It recalls French group Air’s Moon Safari period with a thick biscuity bass line, a scrumptious pulsing synth filling and a topping of glitch snare and lush harmonies. As always Katie’s lyrics tell a deeply personal story of love lost and ultimately redemption. A stunning single, it leaves one wondering what will be next.
