My Deaf Eyes are an up-and-coming four piece band based in Cairns. Starting life as a cover band, they initially centred their sound on 90s hits and alternative/indie rock. Now, with the arrival of new front woman Joanne Heming, they’re dipping more into the world of originals. My Deaf Eyes will be playing one of their first all original sets when they kick off the “At The Edge” gig on Friday night the 20th of December, which, will also be the NQMP xmas party.
The four piece band consist of Guitarist Drew Melrose, Vocalist Joanne Heming, Drummer Ian McPherson and Bassist Patrick Price.
Joanne Heming started her musical journey back in 2012 as a student at TAFE studying Cert 3 and Cert 4 in Music. During this time, Joanne carved out a name for herself amongst the local music scene in Cairns. Cutting her teeth at premier events such as FNQ’s renowned singer songwriter night, Resonate, The Wallaby Creek Festival, on stage at the coveted Tank 5 (for Ray Elias’ Singer Song Writer Showcase), Up Late in Tank 4 (for Australian icon, Dan Sultan), showcased on Balcony TV Cairns and received the 2015 BIGSOUND scholarship. Joanne joined as the new vocalist for My Deaf Eyes in 2018 after meeting the bands’ drummer Ian McPherson at a party.
Ian McPherson – Played for a couple of bands in the local metal scene in the 90s and early 2000s. Ian joined My Deaf Eyes in 2014. Influences include Iron Maiden, Motley Crew, Rage Against The Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice In Chains, Tool and Sound Garden/Audio Slave. Ian says that their original music is “Indie alternative with a bit old school rock thrown in” punters on Fri night can expect a set of originals with a “Fresh sound, Soulful elements, and it will be fun and upbeat”. Although it is early days at the moment, the band plans on getting some recordings done and out on the airwaves.
Drew Melrose – Was in an original band called Hiding Ernie for 4 years. They won battle of the bands in Geelong, got picked up by a manager, released 4 cd’s and also recorded 2 songs with Australia’s Unsigned Artists + featured in their magazine.
Patrick Price – Patrick started off in an original band in high school. And they placed 4th in 2009 Unearthed High. Various gigs between Townsville and Cooktown. The band placed 3rd in Battle of the Bands in Townsville 2009. He’s no stranger to My Deaf Eyes with this being his second time around in the band. He reclaimed the bassist’s throne in October of this year.
