Wonderland Under The Stars

To quote the truly fabulous disco group The Village People, ‘You can’t stop the music, nobody can stop the music.’ And although COVID-19 is still not quite done with 2020 yet, you’d better believe the audience and performers’ thirst for live entertainment is stronger than ever. And with that in mind, the team from the touring Wonderland Spiegeltent have put together a spectacular socially-distanced program of live entertainment including world class circus, roving entertainers, foot-stomping blues music and acoustic rock and roll, all performed outdoors under the tropical night skies in the breathtaking Rex Smeal Park in Port Douglas.

Over the weekend of September 10 – 13, Wonderland Under The Stars invites you to experience the magic, music and wonder from the Golden Age of circus and travelling entertainment. The weekend’s events include the must-see, internationally acclaimed circus sensation A Simple Space, roving performances by firetwirlers and percussionists, live music by outstanding North Queensland blues outfit Lady Valiant supporting raucous blues-billy-rockin-roots festival favourites 19-Twenty and the original bad-ass of Australian rock, Tex Perkins.

Melissa Head, Director of Wonderland Spiegeltent said, “It’s been an extraordinary year for everyone, and part of the ethos of Wonderland Spiegeltent has always been to create a magical escape for audiences through live performance. Putting together this show has been met with overwhelming positivity, and we cannot wait to be back on stage, this time in the open air under tropical stars.”

The Wonderland Spiegeltent has been a regular fixture in the entertainment calendar in Far North Queensland and the East Coast, touring their award-winning and world-class shows extensively throughout the year. While COVID-19 has put a pause on the full program inside the nostalgic velvet curtains of the Spiegeltent for the moment, the lifted restrictions have allowed for a creatively socially-distanced and COVID-safe event full of magic and music.

PROGRAM

Prepare yourself for circus striped back to its essential elements. A Simple Space (Sept 10 – 13) is a circus performance that will set audiences alight with non-stop feats of acrobatic artistry, leaving you breathless and inspired by what the human body is capable of. Seven acrobats push their physical limits without reserve supported by driving live percussion and presented so intimately that you can feel the heat and hear every breath. An extraordinary, fun-filled experience for all ages, A Simple Space is circus that showcases the teamwork it takes to pull off these hair-raising stunts.

Inspired by the original Delta Blues masters, Lady Valiant (September 10 – 13, pictured below) is wildly popular duo made up of local guitarist Marty Brown and South Carolina native Glenna Lynes. Lady Valiant mix old school blues from the Deep South with a twist of modern rock into their original music. Using a unique blend of dirty slide guitar, raw soulful vocals, and a solid drum groove they bring an authentic fresh sound to the stage with raw power and originality.

19-Twenty (September 11) are a high-energy, electric and infectious bluegrass-rockin’-roots band that have been whipping up a frenzy on the festival scene in recent years. Constantly on the road or in the sky, the 19-Twenty lads have toured seven times around Oz and performed gigs throughout Europe including Belgium, The Netherlands, France, and a suite of gigs in London. Easily one of the most exciting riff and groove based blues and roots acts in existence, this is definitely one live music event you don’t want to miss.

Tex Perkins (September 12) – The original bad-ass frontman of Australian rock and roll, Tex Perkins has a celebrated history. A man whose career has taken him from experimental punktronica through to the dizzying heights of multiple ARIA awards and recognition with The Cruel Sea and Beasts of Bourbon, he is now now in an exclusive, intimate and acoustic performance in North Queensland, getting his swamp blues groove on, a little reminiscent of the old days whilst fleshing out some new tunes. Not to be missed.
